What is a Tenebrae Service?
The word ‘tenebrae’ is Latin for shadows. The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story, so this is not supposed to be a happy service, because the occasion is not happy. If your expectation of Christian worship is that it should always be happy and exhilarating, you won’t appreciate this service until the second time you attend it. The service was originally designed for Good Friday, but it can be used for Maundy Thursday as well. Both services have long scripture narratives, which for this service are divided into seven, eight, or nine parts, each one assigned to a different reader.
In examining the events of Holy Week, Who Is Jesus? uses music and narration to provide some answers to this important question. The centerpiece of this work is a powerful text by Timothy Dudley-Smith that carries us through the entire story of Christ’s life. “Who Is Jesus?”, not “Who Was Jesus?” – is a question asked in the present tense because it’s Christ’s interaction with our lives in the here and now. The work culminates with the crucifixion story in a moving rendition of “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.” Along the way in our questioning journey, the Narrator guides us in our search for answers.
Who Is Jesus? is designed as a Tenebrae, to be used anytime during Holy Week or the Lenten season. Lighting seven candles before the opening narration and extinguishing one after each of the seven songs brings home the meaning of Christ’s inexorable journey to martyrdom.
什麼是「十架清影」崇拜？
「Tenebrae」這個字是拉丁語，意思是「Shadow清影」。Tenebrae 崇拜的目的是為了重現受難故事令人動容的情景，因此這不應是一個歡快的崇拜，因為這不是一個愉快的場合。如果您對基督教崇拜的期望是它應該總是歡愉和振奮的，那您可能無法第一次就體味到這個崇拜的意義。該崇拜最初是為了耶穌受難節設計的，不過也可以用在聖星期四 (Maundy Thursday 或Holy Thursday)。兩個崇拜都包含經文敘述。經文被劃分成七、八、或九個部份，每部份分配給一位不同的敘述者。
